Working Towards Clean & Green Ethiopia
SOS Addis Tefetron Bemalimat Masweged Mahiber (which means in English "Protect the Environment from Pollution by Rehabilitating Nature Association") is an NGO based in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, working to improve the environment of Addis Ababa with focus on plastic waste and air pollution while creating environmental job opportunities for over 80 financially disadvantaged women. The job opportunities include the collection of countless plastic bags from streets for recycling and production of eco-friendly bags to replace plastic bags. SOS Addis is a registered NGO with the Ministry of Justice in Ethiopia
Founded in March 2004 by several dedicated women, we are still a young NGO, but have made some significant achievements especially in awareness raising and advocacy. We organize an annual anti-festal pollution campaign ('festal' is a local word for a flimsy plastic bag) and mobilize more than 1000 people each year; we have influenced the banning of thin (< 0.03mm) plastic bags in Ethiopia (Proclamation 513). The efforts of SOS Addis were recognized by the city of Addis Ababa in the form of the "2008 Addis Ababa City Administration Green Award".
We hope you will enjoy our website; we also hope that we can find a way to work together to clean the city of Addis Ababa and to improve the livelihoods of financially disadvantaged people, especially women!
